Renewable energy technologies are critical to society’s climate change mitigation plans. Yet, these technologies will be implemented in an increasingly warmer, more variable climate, which is likely to impact how the systems function. This creates a feedback loop wherein the technology we are relying on for clean energy and climate change mitigation is being impacted by climate change itself, possibly leading to lower reliability. In this Science Talk, Dr. Obringer will focus on a series of studies aimed at understanding this feedback loop through data-driven modeling. In particular, she will discuss the capabilities of interpretable artificial intelligence (AI) to provide critical insights into the climate-energy nexus, allowing for more proactive resilience planning and improved climate change mitigation outcomes
